Unlike cheaper uPVC models, wooden windows provide an elegant, more traditional look for your home that blends neatly with older brickwork. Wooden windows require a paint/varnish job once every other year at the most to keep them in good condition and come in a range of different colours, patterns and grains for you to choose from – perhaps most surprisingly, they don’t cost quite as much as you might expect! To help you budget for new wooden windows we have laid out the following price plan, listing the cost of each type of wooden window (or part) along with separate labour charges:

  • Double-Glazed Unit – for an average-sized single bedroom window of 1200x1200mm, a typical double-glazed wooden unit (including all glass panes) will cost around £419 to £500
  • Double-Glazed Panel – a single glass panel with a wooden frame will usually be around half the price of an ordinary unit; so for a 630-650 x 1050-1200mm model, expect to pay around £216 to £243
  • Sash Window – while a little more expensive, wooden sash windows keep that authentic period look to your property intact and can still be double glazed if necessary. For an average-sized bedroom window prices are usually around £550 to £650 per window.
  • Wooden Casement/Frame – purchasing your frame and panel separately is a clever way of saving a bit of cash, especially if you are prepared to shop around for the best deal. Prices will vary according to the size of your frame, but for a 2300x1200mm hardwood frame (with room for 4 panels) look to pay around £630; that’s just £157.50 per panel!
  • Labour Costs –while it might be tempting to save money here and just DIY the whole project yourself, installing new windows (panes, units or otherwise) can be a lengthy and complicated process, and unless you have practice in the field you are best off leaving things to a professional. Costs will vary from company to company, but you should be prepared to pay around £100 to £150 a day per man on the job; and for windows on a first or second floor an additional £250 a day for scaffold hire.

Obviously the cost of wooden windows will depend on the type of wood you choose (oak often being the cheapest, darker hardwoods such as mahogany or maple being along the more expensive end of the scale). Most will still come with a ten to fifteen-year guarantee and last well beyond that – making this new investment in windows with aesthetic appeal more than worthwhile.
