Choosing Your Conservatory Blinds

Choosing your conservatory blinds - with such a varied selection of conservatory blinds available, it can be difficult to choose the right ones so find out more here.

Pleated blinds

Pleated blinds are easy to install on uPVC conservatory windows. They reflect 83% of the sun’s heat – making them a great option for a summer’s day. If you decide to buy pleated blinds, make sure you buy the appropriate width. The smaller the pleat, the neater it will generally look in your conservatory.

Roman blinds

The most traditional alternative to pleated blinds are roman blinds. Available in a variety of materials, the usual choice people make for their conservatory blinds is French pinoleum. French pinoleum conservatory blinds filter sunlight and also block out glare. Roman Blinds come in a variety of materials and colours, allowing you to customise the blinds to match your current decor.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds can be bought in a wide range of fabrics and materials intended for conservatory blinds although the best choice for conservatories are ones that use special solar-reflective aluminiumbacking to provide essential control over temperature and glare. Although a proportion of these blinds have a quite simple design, there is no doubt that they do their job well as a conservatory blind.

Vertical and Venetian blinds

Vertical and Venetian blinds are available in three main materials wood, wood effect and aluminium. Although the latter will offer you very sturdy conservatory blinds, they do collect dust easily. Similarly to the other blinds on offer, vertical and Venetian blinds also block out a lot of the sun’s rays and keep glare to a minimum.

Freestanding timber shutters

Freestanding tall timber shutters must be positioned correctly in order to reduce glare; they are very useful if you are planning to use the conservatory as an extension to your home. You can take the option in having external shutters installed, but for this sort of project it would be a good idea to hire a professional.

Solar blinds

One of the best features of solar blinds is their insulation features during the winter months. Solar blinds are able to absorb a large amount of the sun’s rays, helpful in the summer months; this leaves them with insulation properties during the winter months. Solar blinds are typically lightweight, easy to install and can be bought in a variety of colours.

How much do blinds cost?

Prices of conservatory blinds will vary depending on size and style. Roller blinds tend to be the cheapest at around £15 per blind whereas pleated blinds would set you back around £40 per blind, depending on the size of the width of the conservatory windows. Solar blinds are the most expensive on the list and you could pay in excess of £100 for a good sized solar blind. For best results get your conservatory blinds fitted by a professional and get at least three quotes for the work before you hire – as with all home improvement work, check the contractor has valid insurance too.
