Barry Johnston, 39, was assaulted by 29 year old Daniel Beattie and an accomplice in April last year. Construction worker Beattie hopped over a fence before putting Barry in a headlock, leaving him open to the random weapon.
By the time the accomplice was finished with the assault, Barry had two broken ribs, two broken fingers, bruising, cuts to his head and a collapsed lung.
Beattie failed to give evidence, though he still denied the charges.
Sheriff Wyllie Robertson said: “The only sentence I can pass here is an extended sentence, to protect the public from the risk of severe harm.”
The judged imposed a four-year sentence with a three-year extension for post-release supervision.
